2011 Festival Highlights
Beethoven and the Romantics, the theme of the 2011 Toronto Summer Music (TSM) Festival, is an exploration of Romanticism in all its many manifestations, with Beethoven at its heart. The program of concerts was crafted to follow the path of the Movement from its Origins (Hayden and Mozart), through its Heroes including two very special all-Beethoven evenings, its Poets of Art Song, its Forgotten Romantics and finally to its inevitable Twilight.
Highlights of the Festival include: opening night with pianist Kirill Gerstein, 2010 winner of the coveted Gilmore Artist Award, Beethoven’s complete Piano Trios performed by the 2011 Juno award-winning Gryphon Trio on August 10 and 11, voice recitals by Sir Tom Allen on July 26 and by Kiera Duffy and Nicholas Phan on August 4, the Friday (Late) Night experiment on July 29 and a glorious Resident Artists finale featuring André Laplante on August 13. summermusic.com/index.php?option=com_artcalendar&view=calendar&Itemid=60">
The TSM Academy this year featured a new concert series - the Mentors and Fellows concerts. The TSM Fellows had an unprecedented opportunity to take the stage with their mentor-coaches, including Menahem Pressler, Anton Kuerti, the Vienna Piano Trio and the Nash Ensemble. Returning in 2011 were the Masterclasses and Outreach Concerts as well as our free and much cherished pre-concert lectures. The Festival moved to Koerner Hall for five mainstage concerts this year, in addition to eight concerts in Walter Hall at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music – venues expressly designed for an ideal classical music experience.
